Return To Activity (Sport/Work/Study)

Effective return to activity after concussion requires more than symptom resolution or adherence to rigid timelines. Clinicians must understand the underlying pathophysiology, apply early and appropriate intervention, and guide a safe, individualised progression back to work, study, and sport.

This 5-part online mini-series provides a structured, evidence-informed framework for concussion rehabilitation and return-to-activity decision-making, spanning the acute phase through to persistent presentations.

Designed primarily for physiotherapists, the series integrates foundational science with practical clinical reasoning to support confident management across diverse concussion presentations.

What Will You Learn?

Module 1 — Introduction to concussion: the neurometabolic cascade.

Understand the physiological basis of concussion — and why it matters for how you rehabilitate. Covers the neurometabolic cascade, acute symptom generation, and the distinction between physiological and clinical recovery, with direct implications for patient education and load management.

Module 2 — Early intervention and acute management.

Move beyond outdated rest-based models. This module outlines a staged approach to early intervention — from active rest through to graded reintroduction of physical and cognitive load — with a focus on individual management strategies and early identification of risk factors for prolonged recovery.

Module 3 — Expected recovery trajectories.

Learn to differentiate between expected symptom resolution, delayed recovery, and persistent presentations — and understand the factors that contribute to each. Covers clinical reasoning around monitoring progress, adjusting rehabilitation load, and recognising when recovery is deviating from the expected course.

Module 4 — Return-to-activity protocols.

Translate rehabilitation principles into practical return-to-work, study, and sport frameworks. Rather than rigid timelines, you'll apply individualised progression based on symptom response, physiological tolerance, and task demands — supporting safer, more confident return-to-function decisions.

Module 5 — Concussion in children.

Address the unique demands of managing concussion in children and adolescents. Covers developmental considerations, return-to-school and sport decision-making, and how to balance cognitive, physical, and psychosocial demands with age-appropriate rehabilitation and progression strategies.

Who Is This Course For?

✓ You're a physiotherapist managing concussion patients across sport, private practice, or clinical settings.

✓ You want a clearer, more structured approach to return-to-activity decision-making beyond generic protocols.

✓ You're confident with the basics of concussion but want to develop your clinical reasoning around rehabilitation progression.

✓ You want CPD that translates directly into patient care — applicable from your very next concussion presentation.

✓ You work with children or adolescents and want more confidence navigating return-to-school and sport decisions.
